Coping with Back Pain
Back pain is the sixth costliest condition in the United States, affecting Nearly 65 million Americans according to Georgetown University. It’s very common and prevents us from completing daily activities. From someone who suffers from severe back pain every day, there are a few ways to cope with the discomfort.
Cold therapy can be very beneficial as it takes away the swelling, reduces the nerve activity, and causes a numbing effect, according to Spine Health. Icing your back decreases inflammation around the aggravated area, which subsides the pain. While heat is also often used, it’s more beneficial for relieving tightness and relaxing your muscles.
It’s important to keep your body moving around a little so it doesn’t get too stiff. Taking time to stretch out your back muscles helps relieve tightness and back pain. Because the muscles in the back extend in many different directions, it’s important to do a variety of stretches. Some basic stretches include: lying flat on your back and pulling your knees to your chest, a spinal twist, and supermans, according to Virtua Health. Personally, when I sit all day, the aggravation is worse than when I move around.
Taking the extra step to exercise after stretching will benefit your back immensely. In fact, exercises, like running and core work, strengthen your back, according to Daily Burn. A 2017 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that a regular long-distance running regimen improves the health of intervertebral discs, which help absorb shock to the spine. Other forms of exercise such as yoga and cardio work to alleviate aggravation in your back.
Correct your posture
You can avoid lower back pain by maintaining proper posture when sitting or while performing physical activities. Avoid slouching as much as possible and aim to keep your spine in alignment.
Over the counter medication
Taking anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen, Advil, or Motrin can relieve inflammation and back pain. “My back pain is so bad. I usually take Advil. It helps relieve the pressure,” says Bret Reynolds, a college student at Western Carolina.
