2020 NFL Draft Team Needs: NFC West

Top Left: Los Angeles Rams Top Right: San Francisco 49ers Bottom Left: Arizona Cardinals Bottom Right Seattle Seahawks

Every NFL team has certain positions on their roster that they need to fill in order to sustain success. NFL teams usually gain success by winning their division, and, hopefully, winning their conference in order to earn a chance to compete for a championship. When it comes to filling positions, it is better to find those players either in free agency, trades with other teams, or the NFL Draft. I am going to take a further look into the teams in the NFL’s National Football Conference West Division.

The biggest needs for the Arizona Cardinals are on the offensive line, at linebacker and at defensive end. Arizona should grab an offensive lineman at the NFL Draft, where they should pick Iowa Hawkeye Tristin Wirfs. It’s a tossup to determine the best offensive line prospect in this draft, but Wirfs is one of the better, coming from a school in Iowa that produces a lot of NFL talent at his position. Wirfs will most likely be the blindside protector for last year’s number 1 overall pick and AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, quarterback Kyler Murray. The Cardinals should look to get a linebacker in free agency. Former Cincinnati Bengal Nick Vigil is still available. I don’t think the Cardinals are in a position to where they would trade down and take a linebacker in the draft, so this is a scenario where they could potentially spend less money on a guy in Vigil who would likely be brought in to only maximize the depth of their linebacker core. The best place for the Cardinals to get a defensive end would be at the NFL Draft, where they should grab Auburn defensive lineman Derrick Brown. Brown was a Unanimous All-American this past season for the Auburn Tigers, and some consider him the best prospect in this draft. He is arguably the most dominant defensive player in this draft next to Ohio State’s Chase Young and would provide immediate help to this Arizona defense.

The three biggest needs for the San Francisco 49ers are at wide receiver, defensive back, and on the offensive line. The best place for the 49ers to get a wide receiver would be at the NFL Draft, where they should take Clemson Tiger Tee Higgins. There could be as many as six wide receivers taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, and there is a high possibility that there will be over 15 wide receivers taken in the first two days of the draft. Because San Fran still has their original first-round pick they can use that to draft Higgins, and use his 6’4” frame and outstanding body control as another weapon for the 49ers offense. San Francisco should grab a defensive back at the NFL Draft as well. One DB that would be a steal because of the trade that the 49ers made with the Indianapolis Colts is Florida Gator C.J Henderson. After Ohio State corner Jeffery Okudah, there’s a huge drop off to the draft’s next best corner. Henderson’s a tall and athletic corner that a lot of teams have their eyes on. Because San Fran made that trade, they also made it possible for them to take Henderson. The best place for San Francisco to get an offensive lineman would be in free agency. Washington Redskin Trent Williams has made it perfectly clear that he doesn’t plan on playing with the Redskins anymore. Williams is one of the best players at his position and would be a great asset to this 49er team.

The top needs for the Seattle Seahawks are at defensive end, on the offensive line, and at defensive back. While the Seahawks have made the playoffs 7 out of the last 8 years, their team has been riddled with injuries and needs to sure up their depth at the NFL Draft. A defensive end that the Seahawks should target is Penn State Nittany Lion, Yetur Gross-Matos. Gross-Matos was extremely productive in his time at Penn State and should provide much-needed help for Seattle’s defense. The offensive lineman that Seattle should target is Michigan Wolverine Cesar Ruiz. Ruiz is considered the best interior offensive lineman in this draft class and would be a great value pick for the Seahawks. The defensive back that the Seahawks should target is Minnesota Golden Gopher Antoine Winfield, Jr. Winfield is not only one of the best safeties in this draft class, but he also brings great special teams play to any team that would draft him.

The top three needs for the Los Angeles Rams are on the offensive line, defensive end, and defensive back. Because the Rams don’t have a first-round pick, they should probably look more to free agency this spring. Offensive lineman Trent Williams is still available for the Rams to grab. Willams would be another great piece to add to this Rams offense. JaDeveon Clowney is still available. The Rams arguably already have the best defensive player in the NFL on their team in defensive tackle Aaron Donald, but if they were to add Clowney, that would make them an unstoppable force. They could look to the draft for a defensive back. California safety Ashtyn Davis can play anywhere on defense except on the line. Davis is an exceptional tackler in space and would provide great depth to this Rams defense.
