What started as a meme has now become something deadly. The coronavirus originated in China and has now spread worldwide. There are about 255,904 cases in 41 countries. The first two cases emerged in South Carolina on March 7, but speculation started on March 6. It is essentially shutting down the whole state.
Schools have closed, dining in at restaurants is banned, and there is now an 11 pm curfew in place. It seems that the whole world as we know it is being turned upside down.
Along with the social effects come economic effects. Many restaurants and businesses have already closed down. Other businesses like grocery stores, movie theaters, malls, and others have been closed. Retail stores like Apple, Nike, and Patagonia have closed. The coronavirus has already caused a downfall in the stock market and it is only getting worse.
In South Carolina alone there have been 60 cases as of March 18. Along with the confirmed cases, there has been one death in Lexington.
So what does the coronavirus, aka COVID-19, look like? The symptoms include a sore throat, runny nose, fever, cough, tiredness, and in severe cases difficulty breathing.
According to cdc.gov, we should wash our hands regularly, avoid close contact, get tested and stay home if you think you could have it, cover coughs and sneezes, wear face masks in public, and clean and disinfect everything regularly to prevent the spread. To properly disinfect things, one should make a solution of 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water.
Social distancing and self quarantine are important because it limits the chance of catching the virus. It is recommended that people stay at least 6 feet away from others. Self quarantine is an effective way of avoiding the virus completely. It is said that two weeks of quarantine is preferable because the coronavirus runs its course in that amount of time.
In summary, the coronavirus is throwing the world a curve ball and the best way to stop it is self distancing and quarantine.
