Managing homework with after school activities

Dear Benny,

I have a lot of homework, but after I get out of practice, shower, and eat, I am way too tired to complete it.  What should I do?

Dear Athlete,

I understand that after school activities like sports can be very time consuming when it comes to completing homework every night.  In order to solve this problem, I think it’s best to try and attempt to get most of your work done before practice starts. Maybe some days you can stop by the library during lunch, so you can catch up with any schoolwork or homework that needs to be completed.  Although this will sacrifice the time spent with friends, I think this is a good way to get your work done and out of the way.

At times if you are having trouble with doing your work before school is over, you should try to manage your time right when you get home.  Rather than getting a shower first, you could try getting the most important stuff done first and then do the easy stuff after you shower (or you could try getting all your work done before you shower). If you keep up with this habit, it will be less stressful and you’ll be a lot more comfortable knowing that you have a schedule to follow.   Either way, doing this beforehand or having a plan will prevent stress and will increase proficiency with your grades.

Good luck,
